My favorite artwork of this semester is the house that I built for the architecture unit. Its my favorite because 1. I put many hours of work into it 2. I enjoyed building it and 3. I love architecture. An artwork that I would like to redo would be my figure artwork. I think I could have carried out a much better concept If I had more time. Something that I learned in 3D art is that just because I don't particularly enjoy drawing, I really enjoyed sculpture. I used to think of art as mostly painting and drawing but I now realize that its much more than that. Its not even half of what art really is. There is something for everyone and there is endless options. Something I would have liked to do this year would be actual pots on spinning wheels but I realize that that would be difficult with a bunch of high school students. It would be fun though

My artwork is a mobile. There is a circle of wire at the top and hanging from it is fishing line holding a ball that is made to look like earth. The earth has blue and green blobs on it. There is a heart on the center of it that is red. It has 7 different blobs in the heart, each with a different initials. On the top of the earth there is some greenery and a flower. If you go up the line a bit you see a green plumbob. Above the plumbob are more strings of greenery and flowers. Around the wire at the very top are split leaves surrounding the whole thing. To create the artwork, I started with the earth. I used a bowl and plaster to mold two half circles. Then I plastered the circles together. I used modge podge and tissue paper to seal the ball and to add the earth idea. Then I used a piece of wire to fish the fishing line through the ball. I used a friendship bracelet type of knot and tied a bead at the bottom of the world so that the earth would look like it's floating. I cut out triangles of cardboard and paper taped them together to create the plumbob. I painted the plumbob green because the plumbob in Sims 4 is green and I wanted it to represent that. I used another bead and knot to make the plumbob float above the earth. I hot glued fake greenery and flowers to the fishing line and globe. I also hot glued some leaves to the top ring. I used hot glue to secure the knots I tied in the fishing string. This artwork was all about identity and what makes a person a person. I think that my artwork is very odd and confusing at first glance but once I explain it, it all makes sense. I tried to show some of my favorite things in the WORLD with this project. I used the earth idea because I wanted to show what makes up MY world. At the center of the earth I wanted to show the people who make up my world and so I wrote the initial letter of each of their names. The plumbob represents 1. my love of architecture and 2. my love of the game Sims 4. I have many plants in my room and I love succulents and greenery. So I incorporated that into my art as well. I obviously have many other things that make up me and my life but I just wanted to focus on my main favorites. My goals for this artwork were to effectively show my personality in a interesting but cool way. My over all thoughts on this artwork are that it was very different from my previous artworks and its very odd but I think that it all came together and it really points out the things Im fond of.
So far my project is going well. I developed my craft by using a bowl and plaster to make two half circles. I plastered them together and sealed the sphere with modge podge and tissue paper. I used blue and green tissue paper to express my world concept. I'm using the world idea because I want to show what's important in MY life/ MY world. So far my plan is on schedule. I like the use of tissue paper because its flat and it is dual purpose. It works as a seal and as a decoration. Tomorrow I plan on starting to string the world to start the mobile and possibly start making the plumbob.
My studio habits for this artwork are express and reflect. I'm trying to express my identity by showing all of my favorite things in this artwork. I'm using reflect because I had to take time and really think about all the things that make me happy/sad or that contribute to my identity. Im planning on using plaster so far. I'm not sure how I will do my images quite yet. I would like to use a string of leaves on the line that will hold my world up. Like Ivory leaves possibly. My whole idea is that my world contains all the things I like and in the middle of my world are the people who are in my heart. The green emblem on the middle of the line of my mobile shows my love of Sims 4. Each sim walks around with the ¨Plumbob¨ floating over their head so I wanted that above my world. Then the string of plant represents my love of plants and green.
My artwork is about 1 and half feet tall. It is a wire sculpture painted to look like a shiny statue. the color is a dark pink. The figure does not have a face but it has a head and a body. It is shaped like a girl. I started with wire and made the rough outline of the figure. I then added on tin foil to shape her. After the tinfoil I used modge podge and paper towels to seal the body and to make it easier to paint. I painted it black and then used a technique called ¨Feather brushing¨ to pu on the metallic outside. I wanted to express being sassy so I had her put one hand on her hip and her other hand in the air. My goals were to make a figure and to make it look like a cool statue. My overall thoughts are that it is ok. Its not favorite but I feel like it looks decent. For this artwork I was going for a pineapple. I'm really into plants so I wanted to make a little pot that looks like a pineapple and then the plant coming out of the top would look like the top of a pineapple. I used Sassy Yellow for the base color and Yadro for the brown specks. I used develop craft and engage and persist for my studio habits. I used develop craft when I was working with the clay because It's something pretty new to me. Forming and making details in the clay is something I haven't done much. I used engage and persist many times. I spent a whole day trying to form the pot right and I couldn't get it. I kept going though and I finally came out with something I liked. It turned out pretty good and I like how it actually resembles a pineapple for the most part. I am so glad I added the last glaze for the brown spots because I think that's what really made it perfect.
My plan is to create a semi realistic girl figure. I'm not sure on how I will paint her yet. I want the proportions to look balanced. I'm using the develop craft studio habit because I am learning how to work with wire and aluminum foil which is something new to me. I'm trying to really engage by spending a lot of time sculpting this figure so that it looks proportionate. So far I have built the wire frame and have started piecing on the aluminum foil. Im trying to express balance as much as I can.
My artwork is a collection of differently shaped and colored glass shards on a white cabinet door. I have a couple of differently colored circles glass rocks as well. They are arranged to show proportion. So that means that there are straight edges on the outside and odd edges of the insides. All of the pieces together create a rectangle. The process of creating my artwork was first of all finding the materials (Which was leftover shards from a different project and a leftover cabinet in the barn) then arranging and glueing them to my liking. I searched through and tried different pieces in different places until I thought it looked proportional. The big idea behind my artwork is the phrase "A place for everything and everything in its place." Keeping things organized and in place is my biggest way to handle anything that comes my way and I wanted to show that even though these shards seem chaotic, if they are put in the right place, they still are organized and they are proportional. My goal for this artwork was to make it proportional and to have organized chaos. My overall thoughts on my artwork is that I really like how I arranged everything. It was almost therapeutic and it was a fun project. I think it looks very good.
My artwork is a two story cardboard home. It has two balconies and many windows. I painted it a gray brown color and the pillars of the balconies were made out of rocks consisting of brown, gray, white, and tan. I wanted to stick to an earthy color palette. Following that, the home is surrounded by green moss on the ground. I wanted to incorporate things that looked more realistic for the build so I figured moss and real shingles left over from my aunts house were a good idea. The shingles are a darker color to a light gray. This fits well with the earth tones. I went for a modern structure with straight lines and a lot of boxes. I did make some idents in the house to add a sort of difference so it wouldn't look completely like a box. The balconies are a medium brown color and are in front of the house instead of in the back. The process of creating this house was very long and there were many details and ideas that I wanted to execute in order to make the house look good. I decided to go big or go home so I tried to do everything I could think of that I could manage with the time limit. I started with building the house on one of my favorite games, the Sims 4, which lets me build very realistically proportioned houses across a grid. To start on the actual house, I first cut out a base which was just a square of cardboard about 2ft by 2ft and I gridded it in inches to help me place the structure since that's how the home was built on the sims. I then cut out all the wall pieces and used paper tape to put everything together. One I had all the bottom level walls put together, I attached that to my baseboard using hot glue. In the walls I cut out where windows would be ahead of time before attaching. Then I paper taped a ceiling onto the top of floor one and moved on to make floor two which was essentially the same process. For the windows I glued clear plastic pieces into the inside of the house where the holes are, which from the outside, made it look like windows. I painted the house and worked on the pillars during the whole project. To make the pillars I paper taped 4 pieces of cardboard together and then hot glued small rocks in a random order onto the pillars. I then made the balconies which was just more cutting and glueing. I used hot glue to attach moss surrounding the outside of the house on the base. The roof was one of the more difficult parts. I started by measuring and cutting triangles based on the degree and lengths of the ceiling. I started with a base of a larger roof in the middle and then I had three different sprouts off of that. Once I had those bases, I cut out the shingles and hot glued them on. For the doors of the home I used pieces of cardboard, but cut out a small design on them to accentuate that they were doors not windows. For the "glass" I also used the plastic sheets that I used for the windows. I was inspired by some of Charles R. Stinson's work. I loved the home he built called "Modern Lake Home" That is where I got the idea for a earth theme. I really like the way he did a chunky rock pillar look and how he used earth tones throughout the whole house. My goals for this artwork were to make the house contain more realistic parts, to try to make all of the edges mostly smooth and not so ruff cut, and to make the house proportionate. My overall thought on my artwork is that I think I spent a lot of time on it and that for the time I had it looks pretty good. I could have added things but I think for now It looks nice. I'm happy with how it turned out.
